Foreign diplomats offer National Day best wishes to Lao leaders

Foreign diplomats on Sunday met with President Thongloun Sisoulith, Prime Minister Sonxay Siphandone and other Party and state leaders to offer best wishes as the nation celebrates the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lao PDR.
At a gathering held at the Presidential Office, the Malaysian Ambassador to Laos, Mr Edi Irwan Mahmud, represented the diplomatic corps in delivering a speech to extend best wishes to Lao leaders and citizens in the run up to National Day on Tuesday.
He said “It is a distinct honour and great privilege for me, in my capacity as Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, to extend, on behalf of all members of diplomatic missions accredited to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, our most sincere and heartfelt congratulations to Your Excellencies, and to the government and people of Laos, on the momentous occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.”
This Golden Jubilee marks half a century of remarkable progress, 50 years of steadfast commitment to peace, independence, and national development since the Lao PDR was proclaimed on December 2, 1975, under the guidance and steadfast devotion of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP), he added.

“On this auspicious day, we also extend our warmest felicitations to the LPRP on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Party. Over the past seven decades, the Party has led the Lao people with unwavering commitment, leading the nation from the hardships of the past towards peace, stability, and development,” he said.
The Malaysian Ambassador observed that, over the past half century, Laos has made remarkable progress. The country has strengthened its human resources, built modern infrastructure, expanded access to education and healthcare, and deepened its engagement in regional and global cooperation, all while preserving its cultural identity and the values that make Laos unique.
The international community fully supports Laos’ aspiration for a smooth graduation from Least Developed Country status in 2026 and the continued pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals.
This milestone will be a great source of national pride and a testament to the country’s steady progress under the guidance of the Party and Government. The Diplomatic Corps reaffirmed its commitment to partner with Laos in ensuring that this transition brings lasting benefits for all Lao citizens, the Ambassador said.
“On behalf of the entire Diplomatic Corps, I wish once again to extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes to Your Excellencies, and to the government and people of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic,” he added.
In response to the good wishes of the diplomatic corps, President Thongloun Sisoulith expressed his sincere gratitude to Mr Edi Irwan Mahmud on behalf of all ambassadors and representatives of international organisations in Laos for his eloquent speech, which honoured and praised the achievements of the country’s leadership over the past 50 years.
President Thongloun also expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the Lao government and people to all friendly countries and international organisations for their support in various fields over past years, saying this had made important and robust contributions to Laos in overcoming various difficulties and challenges.
“The Lao PDR is pleased to continue to actively contribute to the efforts of the international community within the framework of various cooperation mechanisms to which it is a party, to promote peace, stability, security and cooperation for sustainable development in the region and internationally,” President Thongloun said.
Mr Thongloun added that, over the past 50 years, the Lao PDR has gone through a development path full of great transformations, starting out as a country devastated by war, with a backward economic base and facing many difficulties.
Under the leadership of President Kaysone Phomvihane, through a principled path of change, the Lao PDR has made great achievements in all areas, from improving people’s living standards to building important infrastructure for long-term sustainable and stable development.
Looking forward to International New Year 2026, which is fast approaching, the President offered best wishes to all ambassadors and representatives of international organisations in Laos for good health, happiness, and success in their praiseworthy duties.
In addition, he extended warm greetings and best wishes to heads of state and government and people in every country, as well as the leaders of the international organisations they represent. He also wished the citizens of all countries happiness, progress and peaceful coexistence.
“May peace, friendship, and cooperation for development between the Lao PDR and the nations of the world be sustained forever,” President Thongloun said.
