Laos-Vietnam Friendship Park inaugurated in Vientiane

The newly built Laos-Vietnam Friendship Park, located in Dongmakkhai village in Xaythany district, Vientiane, was officially opened on December 2, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
Initially approved in 2022, the park is a generous gift from the Vietnamese Party Central Committee, government and people of Vietnam, reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening bilateral friendship and cooperation.
The inauguration ceremony on Tuesday was co-organised by the Office of the Party Central Committee of Laos and Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The ceremony was attended by the Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and President of Laos, Thongloun Sisoulith; the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s (CPV) Central Committee, To Lam; and high-ranking officials of both sides.
The Friendship Park was built as part of the 2025 cooperation plan and decisions made at the 47th meeting of the Laos-Vietnam Inter-Governmental Committee.
The park cost more than 340 billion Vietnamese dong (more than 279 billion kip), of which 330 billion dong was provided by the Vietnamese government in the form of non-refundable aid, while the Lao government contributed the equivalent of 10 billion dong (about 9 billion kip).
An agreement on the start of construction was signed in Vientiane on March 31, 2025, with a total project value of 340,471,500,000 Vietnamese dong.
Construction is now 99 percent complete, marking the near-finalisation of this important shared venture.
The park features modern ecological and cultural landscaping that incorporates motifs representing the identities of both Laos and Vietnam.
It is strategically positioned in an area that is earmarked to become a major urban centre in Vientiane, and is expected to play an important role in revolutionary-history education, giving younger generations insight into the enduring friendship between the peoples of Laos and Vietnam.
The inauguration ceremony follows a groundbreaking ceremony held at the site earlier this year, led by Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Minh Chinh, accompanied by other senior officials from the two sides.
Head of the Office of the Party Central Committee at that time, Mr Thongsalith Mangnomek (now Minister of Education and Sports), said the project had been endorsed by the governments and politburos of both countries as a symbol of their special solidarity and close cooperation.
He said the park would stand as a meaningful testament to the shared political ties, great friendship and long-standing relationship between the parties, governments and peoples of Laos and Vietnam.
The three-hectare park features statues of Lao Presidents Kaysone Phomvihane and Souphanouvong, alongside Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh.
The statues are set against a backdrop of carved reliefs depicting the two nations’ struggle for sovereignty and liberation from foreign domination.
Additional facilities at the park include a visitor reception and management office, a waterfall, landscaped recreational areas, a children’s playground, lighting, and green spaces.
