PM orders changes to BRT lanes amid traffic flow concerns

The Prime Minister has ordered changes to planned Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) traffic lanes, part of the Vientiane Urban Sustainable Transport Project, in response to public concerns over traffic congestion and road safety.
The alterations include the removal of curbs and specific bus lanes.
The changes were announced in a notice issued by the Office of the Prime Minister on December 12, which also approves payments to contractors for work already completed.
The notice also addresses uncertainties over external funding. If international donors suspend their support for the project, the responsible agencies are required to calculate the losses, close project accounts in an orderly manner, and take steps to ease traffic conditions in Vientiane.
In addition, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the Vientiane Administration, and the Ministry of Public Security to reduce traffic congestion in the rush hour, as city authorities continue to assess the impact of the BRT trial.
Under the BRT scheme, new traffic routes will be introduced on nine main roads in the districts of Sikhottabong, Chanthabouly and Sisattanak to accommodate bus lanes and stops, and the construction of a central bus station on Setthathirath Road.
The route changes are linked to the development of the new Transit Mall, which will run for about 600 metres from the Khounboulom traffic lights at the junction with Vat Inpeng temple to the KhopChai Deu restaurant.
Officials say the adjustments are necessary to ease congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow in the city centre.
As part of the changes, Chao Fa Ngum Road will be one-way inbound, Sithan Road will be one-way outbound, and Khounboulom Road will be one-way inbound.
Rue Françoise Ngin, Nokkeokoumane Road, Manthatourath Road, and the road in front of the French Embassy will become two-way.
