Tourism set to blossom in Huaphan as cherry trees come into flower

The annual blooming of cherry trees in Viengxay district is expected to significantly increase visitor numbers in Huaphan province, providing a boost to the local economy.
A ceremony to officially open the blossom viewing season and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Laos-Japan Friendship Sakura Garden took place on December 18. The event was attended by the Deputy Governor of Huaphan province, Ms Longkham Phonemixay, and the Ambassador of Japan to Laos, Mr Koizumi Tsutomu.

Since 2022, the garden has become a premier destination in northern Laos, attracting a growing number of Lao and foreign tourists during the cool season. Provincial authorities view the garden as a key asset in diversifying Huaphan’s tourism appeal beyond its famous caves.
The garden’s success is attributed to the ongoing support of the Japanese government and the Asian Development with Disabled Persons (ADDP).
Efforts have focused on creating attractive photo spots and improving facilities to ensure the site remains a major drawcard for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
Ambassador Koizumi highlighted the long-term vision for the site, noting that community development projects are being integrated with the garden’s tourism potential. He expressed the hope that in the next 10 to 20 years, these initiatives will be led by local people, ensuring sustainable growth for the district.
In addition to its aesthetic value, the site supports inclusive growth through a vocational training centre for persons with disabilities located within the garden grounds.
Local authorities hope that the “Sakura of Friendship” will continue to flourish, establishing Viengxay as a year-round destination and a symbol of successful international cooperation in tourism.
