Security ministry sets October 31 deadline for surrender of illegal firearms

The Ministry of Public Security has ordered all individuals and entities in possession of illegal firearms and explosives to surrender them to authorities by October 31.
From November 1, anyone found in possession of a firearm will be considered to be in breach of the rules, regardless of the circumstances, and authorities may make immediate arrests.

Notice No. 311/MPS, issued by the ministry on July 16, aims to improve weapons management, reduce violence and accidental injuries, and strengthen public safety and social order across Laos.
The notice prohibits the illegal possession of firearms and explosives by individuals and legal entities, including government officials, civil servants, business owners, Lao citizens and foreign nationals residing in Laos.

Those currently in possession of illegal firearms or explosives must hand them in to police officers at the District or Municipal Public Security Command in their area of residence.

The ministry said the illegal possession and careless handling of weapons can result in violence , accidental discharges, and theft for criminal purposes, putting families and communities at risk.

All citizens and residents of Laos are urged to comply with the notice and contact their local public security authorities for guidance on surrendering weapons.
