Luang Namtha to introduce weekly street market in boost to local trade

Locals and visitors to Luang Namtha province will soon be able to enjoy a weekly pedestrianised street market, which will sell locally made goods to bring in extra income for small businesses and local producers.
The Luang Namtha Provincial Industry and Commerce Department announced that the “Si San Luang Namtha” street market will take place in the provincial capital every Wednesday from 5pm to 10pm, starting later this month.
The market will be set up on the street between the Lao Development Bank and the traffic lights outside the post office, providing a designated space for traders to display and sell their goods.
The scheme is expected to benefit business operators, handicraft makers, producers of traditional and local wisdom products, women traders, and villagers from across the province, by enabling them to interact directly with potential customers.
Interested vendors can register at the Provincial Industry and Commerce Department on one of five working days, specified as March 11, 12, 13, 16 and 17.
During the initial three-month trial period from March to May, vendors will not be required to pay a fee, in order to encourage wider participation and support community-based enterprises.
The organising committee will allocate stall space based on the size and type of goods offered by each vendor, to ensure orderly management of the market.
Vendors must provide their own tables, structural items such as awnings, and lighting.
Authorities hope the pedestrianised street will become a lively marketplace, while helping to promote local handicrafts, traditional products, and community-made goods from across Luang Namtha province.
