BRT bus service offering free rides for two months

Residents of Vientiane can now enjoy faster and affordable travel by using the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which can be used free of charge for the first two months of operation.
The scheme aims to ease congestion, reduce transport costs, and provide a faster, more reliable alternative to travel by private vehicle.
To encourage use of the new bus system, authorities are offering free travel on the BRT network during a two-month trial period from March 10 March to May 9. Buses travel on dedicated bus lanes designed to bypass traffic, allowing commuters to travel quickly though the city without delays caused by congestion.
Buses run daily from 7am to 10pm. During peak hours—between 7-9am and 4-6pm—buses arrive every six to seven minutes, while off-peak services run every 10 to 15 minutes, ensuring consistent and reliable transport.
The route begins at Dongdok, near the National University of Laos, and stops at 19 locations before terminating at Talat Sao, one of the city’s busiest commercial areas.
Key stops along the route include the SEA Games dormitory, Xangkhou, 450 Year Road, Phakhao, SOS School, the Kaysone Phomvihane Museum, ICTC Centre, Phonkheng, Patuxay monument, and That Foun.
Officials say the new system significantly cuts travel times, lowers commuting expenses, and contributes to a cleaner urban environment by reducing vehicle emissions.
The project is a major step on the road to the development of an efficient public transport system in the capital, with authorities hopeful that members of the public will take full advantage of the service during the trial period.
