New chapter for France-Laos relations across investment, logistics and education in Savannakhet

A new chapter in France-Laos relations is unfolding as the Ambassador of France to Laos undertook an official mission to Savannakhet province on Thursday, April 9.
The visit aimed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and deepen the longstanding partnership across the key sectors of investment, logistics, and education.

The Ambassador, accompanied by the Consul and the Attaché for Educational and University Cooperation, was warmly welcomed by the Chief Executive Officer of Savan Logistics and President of the French Foreign Trade Advisors (CCEF), Mr Jean-Pierre Grzelczyk.
As a key figure in the French economic presence in Laos, Mr Grzelczyk’s involvement highlighted the growing synergy between French logistics expertise and local economic needs.

Focusing on the investment climate, the mission included a visit to the site of the French company Essilor. Established in Laos to contribute to local economic development, the company’s operations illustrate the transfer of expertise and job creation driven by French businesses in the province.

During her visit, the Ambassador held discussions with provincial authorities, notably the Chairwoman of the Savannakhet Provincial Administrative Committee, Ms Daovone Xaysoulian, and the Acting President of Savannakhet University, Dr Sithixay Xayavong.
They exchanged views on achievements in cooperation and future prospects within the fields of education and tourism development.

Education and language remained a focal point as the Ambassador took part in the inauguration of the Francophone Space at Savanh High School. The school provides bilingual classes, which are the result of a partnership between France and Laos spanning more than 30 years.
During the event, the Ambassador awarded approximately a dozen students with the internationally recognised DELF diploma, certifying their proficiency in the French language.
Furthermore, the visit provided an opportunity to inaugurate the Tourist Information Centre for the central provinces, alongside the Vice Chairman of Savannakhet Provincial Administrative Committee, Mr Thongsay Sayavongkhamdy.
This centre is a concrete outcome of the CHAMPA project, which aims to enhance the tourism appeal of Savannakhet and Champasak provinces. The project’s implementation is ensured by the French Development Agency (AFD), with support from the French School of Asian Studies (EFEO).
These initiatives reflect France’s ongoing commitment to education, promotion of the French language, and the sustainable development of the tourism and investment sectors in Laos.
