Storm leaves trail of damage in Xayaboury
A storm passed through Xayaboury province on Tuesday, causing damage to houses, offices, temples, schools, a hospital, a market, and vehicles.
Xayaboury District Deputy Governor Ms Philavanh Ongkeo said the storm hit at around 4pm, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and hail, and left a trail of destruction in 20 villages, with 520 houses affected.
Army, health, judicial, education and transport offices suffered varying degrees of damage, along with seven schools, the provincial hospital, a market, and five temples.
Nine electricity poles and 22kV power lines were damaged, as well as a chicken farm and seven vehicles, while a six-year-old girl was struck by a roof tile.
Ms Philavanh said repairs to damaged property were underway. The 419th army battalion had repaired a garage and roof at the health office, in addition to helping with repairs to several houses.
Most families have been able to deal with the damage themselves, which were fairly superficial in most cases.
