Vietnamese investor to study cable car, tourism facilities development in Champasak
Champasak province is moving to attract significant foreign investment in tourism, with a leading Vietnamese developer expected to conduct a feasibility study next month on a potential cable car and tourism facilities project in southern Laos.
The planned study follows discussions held on May 9 in Da Nang, Vietnam, between a Lao delegation led by Champasak Provincial Party Secretary and President of the Champasak Provincial People’s Council, Mr Alounxay Sounnalath, and executives of Vietnam’s Sun Group, a major tourism and infrastructure developer known for the internationally recognised Ba Na Hills tourism complex in Danang.
During the meeting, Mr Alounxay outlined three strategic locations in Champasak for possible tourism development and cable car construction, namely the Phu Sa Lao-Phu Malong area in Phonthong district, the Bolaven Plateau around Pakxong district, and the Si Phan Don (Four Thousands Islands) in Khong district.
According to a local media report, the discussions aimed to encourage the Vietnamese investor to explore opportunities in southern Laos and assess the feasibility of developing world-class tourism infrastructure in the province.
The Phu Sa Lao-Phu Malong area was highlighted for its panoramic views overlooking the Mekong River, while the Bolaven Plateau was recommended for its cool climate and suitability for high-end resorts and eco-tourism facilities. Si Phan Don, meanwhile, was described as a breathtaking river archipelago with strong potential for international tourism.
Mr Alounxay stressed the benefits to be gained from Champasak’s strategic location and growing regional connectivity, particularly through the East-West Economic Corridor linking Laos with Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
He noted that the province is home to the UNESCO-listed Vat Phou Champasak World Heritage Site and possesses strong tourism and agricultural potential, with foreign investors having already invested in large farms cultivating blueberries, blackberries and macadamia.
The Vice President of the Sun Group expressed strong interest in the proposed project and said company representatives would travel to Champasak in June together with a delegation from Da Nang to carry out the feasibility study.
If the study is approved and the project goes ahead, Vietnamese investment could help transform Champasak into a regional tourism hub with modern facilities and international-standard services.
Provincial authorities believe cooperation with experienced foreign investors could help unlock the province’s tourism potential, attract more international visitors, create jobs, and stimulate local economic growth.
