Laos, Vietnam expand media ties with focus on AI and capacity building
The government is seeking to strengthen cooperation in modern media technologies with Vietnam, including the application of AI tools to improve the management of and response to inaccurate information, while planning to organise 15 training programmes over the next five years to improve the capacity of media personnel.
The commitment was highlighted at an MoU signing ceremony and high-level exchange meeting held on Wednesday in Vientiane between the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee of the Lao PDR and Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
During the meeting and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in information and media for the 2026-2030 period, the two sides reviewed their longstanding collaboration in the media sector and discussed future areas of cooperation.
Leading the Lao delegation at the meeting was Party Central Committee member and Deputy Head of the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee, Mr Vansy Kuamua, while the Vietnamese delegation was headed by Party Central Committee member and Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ms Lam Thi Phuong Thanh.
The MoU signing was witnessed by Politburo member and Head of the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee of the Lao PDR, Mr Khamphanh Pheuyavong, along with senior officials and department representatives from both countries.
The Vietnamese delegation acknowledged the recent restructuring undertaken by Laos, under which five major media institutions were placed under the supervision of the Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee.
These include the Department of Media, Lao News Agency, Lao National Television, Lao National Radio, and the daily newspapers Pasaxon and Lao Press in Foreign Languages.
The meeting heard that Laos will convene the National Media Work Conference this year, while information dissemination at the local level has been strengthened to ensure greater coordination and consistency with the central administration.
The two sides noted that the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam in the field of information and media continue to deepen and expand.
Lao media organisations continue to utilise Vietnamese media sources as important references for international reporting, while both sides have worked together to improve content quality and strengthen responses to misinformation and negative narratives.
Vietnam has also continued to support Laos through assistance in broadcasting equipment and the construction of radio and television facilities.
Cooperation in personnel development remains a priority, particularly through training programmes on media leadership and management aimed at strengthening both political awareness and professional skills among Lao media personnel.
The two sides further emphasised the importance of applying the thoughts and theories of Ho Chi Minh and Kaysone Phomvihane as guiding principles for ideological and cultural work, while jointly countering misinformation and safeguarding the policies of the two Parties and States.
