European Film Festival brings groundbreaking initiatives to Laos

The European Film Festival 2026 concluded in Vientiane on Sunday after showcasing European cinema and introducing new training initiatives for young filmmakers in Laos.
The Delegation of the European Union to Laos organised the four-day event at the French Institute. Representatives from the government, diplomatic missions, and students attended the screenings.
This year’s festival featured an exciting programme of award-winning films, capacity-building workshops, and groundbreaking initiatives to foster Lao-European cultural exchange.

EU Ambassador to Laos, EU Member States, government representatives, diplomats, students and film enthusiasts gather at the French Institute in Vientiane for the 2026 European Film Festival.

Opening the event, European Union Ambassador to Laos, Mr Mark Gallagher, said the festival aimed to explore new cultures and build bridges between Europe and Laos.
“Tonight, we gather not just to watch films, but to explore new cultures and perspectives, and to build bridges between Europe and Laos,” he was quoted as saying.
The screenings comprised eight outstanding films from eight European countries: France, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Romania, Spain and Switzerland, each offering a unique window into Europe’s rich cultural tapestry, comprising 27 countries and 24 languages.
From thought-provoking dramas to uplifting comedies, these films reflect the artistic diversity of the continent.
The European Film Festival is a long-standing tradition, organised by EU Delegations worldwide to share Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity with global audiences.
In Laos, the festival has become a regular ingredient of the cultural calendar, fostering people-to-people connections and deepening mutual understanding.
This year, the festival took a bold step forward with two new initiatives designed to support Lao filmmakers and enrich cultural dialogue.
The first initiative is supporting two dedicated workshops for young local filmmakers: one on the art of voice-over and dubbing, and another one on character development and storytelling.
These workshops aim to nurture talent, share expertise, and strengthen the skills of Lao creatives, and we hope they will help to build confidence and craftsmanship amongst local filmmakers.
The second new element is a collaboration with the CinéClub of the “Lanxang Shorts”. This saw the screening of four European films at the French Institute, followed by discussions where audiences exchanged ideas on content, techniques, and the special qualities of each film.
This partnership is more than just screening movies - it’s about creating a space for dialogue, learning, and inspiration.
As a direct result of the dubbing workshop, the festival will premiere a Czech-Romanian co-production dubbed into Lao, a first for Laos.
The film will screen at the French Institute on 3 July, before travelling to Savannakhet’s historic Film Theatre in September and the Blue Chair Film Festival in Luang Prabang in December.
This initiative proves that language is no barrier to great storytelling and marks a significant step in cultural exchange between Europe and Laos.
This year’s edition is made possible through partnerships with the Department for Cinema of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the French Institute, Lanxang Shorts, and the Blue Chair Festival, together with the eight participating European countries.
Daily screenings at the French Institute provided a memorable journey through cinema, a journey that entertained, increased mutual understanding, and deepened the friendship between Europe and the Lao PDR.
