Lao Brewery Company boosts nationwide Rocket Festival celebrations with over 1 billion kip support
As Laos has entered the sixth month of the lunar calendar (between May to Early June), communities across the country are once again preparing to celebrate Boun Bang Fai, or the Rocket Festival — one of the nation’s most treasured cultural traditions that has been preserved and practiced for generations.
This year, Lao Brewery Company Limited has pledged more than 1 billion kip to support the organisation of Rocket Festival celebrations in multiple localities nationwide in 2026, underlining the growing role of the private sector in safeguarding Laos’ cultural heritage.
Deeply rooted in Lao society and agricultural traditions, Boun Bang Fai is held annually before the start of the rice planting season, typically between May and June.
The festival is traditionally organised to pray for rainfall and a successful harvest, reflecting the close relationship between Lao communities, agriculture and nature.

The festival, however, represents far more than a rain-making ceremony. It is regarded as a living expression of Lao identity, community solidarity and local wisdom that has been passed down through generations under the country’s traditional “Heet Sip Song Khong Sip See” customs.
Celebrations are marked by vibrant processions, traditional music and dance, elaborate rocket displays and communal gatherings, drawing both local residents and international visitors eager to witness one of Southeast Asia’s most distinctive cultural festivals.
Lao Brewery Company considers the preservation of Boun Bang Fai as its important responsibility in helping ensure that future generations continue to value and practise the country’s unique cultural traditions.
The company’s financial support is expected to assist organisers in staging safe, dignified and larger-scale celebrations while also helping promote Lao culture and tourism both domestically and internationally.
As Laos continues to modernise and urbanise, cultural experts and officials have increasingly emphasised the importance of preserving traditional festivals such as Boun Bang Fai to maintain cultural continuity and strengthen national identity.
The Rocket Festival itself is believed to date back centuries and originate from ancient fertility and rain-calling rituals practised. Over time, Buddhist merit-making traditions became integrated into the celebrations, creating the unique cultural event seen today.
The festival is also associated with the legendary tale of Phaya Khankhak, or the Toad King, who according to Lao folklore challenged the rain god Phaya Thaen after severe drought devastated the land. Rockets launched during the festival are symbolically believed to remind the heavens to send rain for the coming agricultural season.

Lao Brewery’s support also reflects growing recognition of the economic and tourism potential of traditional cultural events. In recent years, major Rocket Festival celebrations have attracted large numbers of foreign tourists, many of whom participate in parades and gather at launch sites to experience authentic Lao culture firsthand.
The company noted that promoting traditional festivals can help transform local celebrations into tourism attractions that generate income for communities, support local businesses and enhance Laos’ cultural reputation abroad.
Among the major events still scheduled this year is the well-known Rocket Festival in Muang Feuang (Feuang district), which continues to attract huge crowds for its lively atmosphere, traditional customs and dramatic rocket competitions.
For many Lao people, Boun Bang Fai remains not only a festival of entertainment, but also a symbol of unity, heritage and pride — a tradition that continues to connect generations while preserving the cultural soul of the nation.
