Dr Bounfeng Phoummalaysith delivers a talk in Vientiane on Thursday.

UHS to strengthen capacity of Lao National University Hospital

The University of Health Sciences (UHS) will strengthen the operation of the Lao National University of Health Science Hospital while bolstering the role of teaching hospitals by enhancing the education, training and nursing capabilities of health care personnel in Laos.
The current progress of the hospital project was the subject of a seminar titled “Hospital operation management and consulting project for the University of Health Sciences Hospital in Laos.”
The seminar was delivered by Laos’ Minister of Ministry of Health, Dr Bounfeng Phoummalaysith, and attended by the Country Representative of the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) office in Laos, Ms HyunKyong Kim; officials from the Republic of Korea’s Inje University including the Vice President for Medical and Pharmaceutical Affairs and President of the Paik Medical Centre, Dr Byung-Doo Rhee; Project Manager Dr Hoon Kim; and representatives of partners and members of KOFIH, Inje University, Laos’ Ministry of Health, UHS, and central hospitals.
The event aimed to share the results of Phase 2 on consulting through online and on-site workshops and discussing future consulting plans.
Delivering the seminar, Dr Bounfeng said “We are new to establishing and managing the University Hospital but we aim for it to become both a super-tertiary hospital and a teaching and training hospital for the medical profession.”

Lao and Korean officials gather for a group photo at the talk on May 25.

“The plan for the hospital is aligned with the national development plan, which aims to improve the standard of medical services so that the treatment of key illnesses that at present cannot be adequately provided in Laos is made available in the future. We want to see the sustainable improvement and expansion of the provision of medical services through the capacity building of professionals,” he added.
He acknowledged that Laos had learnt many valuable lessons from the Republic of Korea.
These had improved the quality of medical education and laid the groundwork for producing competent medical personnel by building the capacity to deliver an effective medical curriculum.
“This project is of immense importance because it will help us to be successful in improving the quality of medical services in Laos,” Dr Bounfeng said.
During the talk, various topics related to the project were highlighted.
These included the performance and current status of consulting by each project management unit branch, project implementation and coordination, information management and information technology, construction management and environmental impact assessment, and administration, finance, education and medical equipment.
