Govt shares in activities to mark International Children’s Day

The Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union held an event on Tuesday to celebrate National Arbor Day and International Children’s Day on June 1 and World Environment Day on June 5.
The event took place at the ITECC Mall in Vientiane and was led by Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune.
Speaking at the event, Dr Kikeo said National Arbor Day and International Children’s Day are closely linked to World Environment Day and are noteworthy occasions for highlighting important directions for the future of Laos and the world.

“The government sends good wishes and love to Lao children of all ethnic groups across the country, who are the future of the nation and are celebrating International Children’s Day together. May all children grow up with fine virtues,” he added.
He observed that the government has always worked to uphold children’s rights and to prevent the use of violence against children, as well as steering them on a strong development path.
The government recognises the importance of nurturing children so that they become wise leaders of the nation in the future. It has enacted a law on the protection of children’s rights and interests, and plans to adopt a law on Lao youth to further support the development of the younger generation.
The government provides opportunities for Lao children to participate in various activities both in Laos and abroad, and supports forums for children to share their opinions, Dr Kikeo said.
Parents should also play their part in ensuring that children fulfil their potential, by ensuring they eat a healthy diet, enrol in school at the earliest possible age and complete at least secondary school education.
It is also everyone’s responsibility to regulate children’s use of online social media and keep them away from drugs and other disruptive forms of behaviour, which hinder the development of children’s lives and minds.
Dr Kikeo called for everyone to work together to ensure children live a full and productive life free from harmful influences.
