Construction of railway training college 70 percent complete

The Lao Railway Vocational Technical College, which is being built on a 14-hectare site in Vientiane, is now 70 percent complete and is expected to be finished in 2023.
The college is the first of its kind in Laos and will train future employees on the Laos-China Railway.
Minister of Education and Sports, Associate Prof. Dr Phout Simmalavong, recently visited the site to monitor the progress of construction at the extensive facility, which is located in Phokham village, Xaythany district.

The college is funded by a grant from the Chinese government and is being designed and constructed by China, including training facilities and dormitories. The Chinese government is also funding training courses for Lao students in China.
According to the Technical and Vocational Education Department of the Ministry of Education and Sports, the college will offer six courses and enrol about 990 students when it opens next year.
Subjects will include train driving, station services, and electrical repairs and maintenance, among other aspects of railway machinery operations.
As part of preparations for study at the college, Lao students and government officials have been taking courses in railway operation in other countries since 2018, learning about the operation of electricity systems to power trains, other technical matters, and railway operations in general.
In addition, Lao and Chinese officials have initiated a course on railway signal management at Pakpasak Technical College in Vientiane, so that more people are trained for jobs on the railway.
The course covers the use of railway signalling software, Chinese language lessons to enable communication, technical studies, demonstrations, and theoretical and practical lessons.
Education authorities are encouraging secondary school graduates to enrol in various fields of vocational education to support the country’s socio-economic development.
Scholarships have been provided for outstanding students, including those lacking opportunities, people from smaller ethnic groups, females, and people with disabilities.
Meanwhile, young people are increasingly interested in vocational courses, and the Technical and Vocational Education Department has developed curriculums and improved the skills of teachers and education administrators in vocational and technical institutions.
The department is also partnering with foreign countries and the private sector in various projects to prepare more young people for jobs in key sectors and raise their skill levels to international standards.
