The fifth countrywide political-ideological affairs meeting began in Vientiane on Thursday to review work undertaken in the past and outline a roadmap for the future.

Delivering the opening remarks, Politburo member and Vice President Dr Bounthong Chitmany said the two-day meeting would review the work carried out over the past 19 years since the fourth meeting took place in 2003.
This week’s meeting takes the theme ‘Increase the Party’s leadership, create strong and thorough change to political-ideological affairs and the theory of the Party towards new quality’ and will shape the future direction of work in this field.
“Together, we will study and define the direction, targets and focal duties of political-ideological affairs for the future,” Dr Bounthong told meeting participants.
The meeting, which is taking place at the Office of the Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, is chaired by Party Secretary General and President Thongloun Sisoulith.
Politburo members, members of the Party Central Committee, retired state and Party leaders and senior Party cadres are also in attendance.
Dr Bounthong said the Party has consistently attached great importance and attention to political-ideological affairs from the revolutionary era until the present time.
This is reflected by the fact that five political-ideological affairs meetings, including the current one, have been convened.

The first one took place in 1972, the second in 1980, the third after the 6th National Party Congress, and the fourth in 2003.

Dr Bounthong called on participants to draw on best practices and shortcomings and to share recommendations to realise the goals set for the years to come. Party Secretary General Thongloun asked the meeting to review the progress made and explore ways to ensure that Party cadres, state officials and the people of Laos are properly absorbed in political and ideological affairs.
Head of the Propaganda and Training Board of the Party Central Committee, Mr Khamphanh Pheuyavong, presented a report on political-ideological affairs, which reviewed accomplishments over the past 19 years and outlined the future direction.
This was followed by a number of presentations delivered by various state bodies to share their best practices in incorporating political-ideological affairs into their work plans.
They agreed that political-ideological affairs are a core task of their organisations.

Lao leaders said the Party has always attached great importance to ideological affairs as this is the central tenet of the Party, which regards ideological affairs as the main factor in achieving victory of any sort.
