EDL to pilot advanced metering system using Korean smart solutions

Electricite du Laos (EDL) plans to use new smart technology called Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in Vientiane, in cooperation with TIDE Co., Ltd. of the Republic of Korea.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the establishment of a Pilot Project on the scheme was signed on February 9 at EDL’s headquarters in Vientiane.
The MOU was signed by the Acting Director of Power System Planning and Control Department at EDL, Mr Soulivanh Thammavong, and the CEO of TIDE Co., Ltd., Mr Kevin Cho.
The signing was witnessed by representatives of the Electrical Construction and Installation State Enterprise, KOTRA Vientiane, related departments of EDL, and other guests.
The pilot project aims to test the Advanced Metering Infrastructure system in about 150 households, present the performance of TIDE technology as a proof of concept, and evaluate the possibilities for supplying TIDE’s advanced metering products in urban and rural areas of Laos.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure is the backbone infrastructure for a smart energy platform and is one of the essential factors for smart grid operation. Through AMI, real-time based energy consumption can be collected, monitored, black-out status can be detected, and demand and response can be interoperable.
The pilot project will see the installation of smart meters from March to December this year in Hadxaifong district in Vientiane. The installation will be performed by the Electrical Construction and Installation State Enterprise with the support of EDL.
Mr Kevin Cho stressed the importance of the project as a stepping stone to future smart grid projects, not only involving Advanced Metering Infrastructure, but also electric vehicle charging services between Laos and Korea.
