Phu Bia Mining recognises its Lao-national leaders of tomorrow

Phu Bia Mining (PBM), earlier in February, recognised 110 of its Lao-national employees and contractors at its Supervisory Skills Development Programme graduation ceremony held at the Lao Plaza Hotel in Vientiane.
The programme marked the highest female participation since its inception, with 21 percent graduating as part of the 2021 and 2022 cohort.
Implemented in-house at Phu Bia Mining’s Operations, the programme is designed to support its Lao-national workforce transition into more senior roles by providing existing team leaders, supervisors and high-potential employees with the training required for success in frontline leadership roles.

Programme graduates from the 2021 and 2022 Phu Bia Mining’s Supervisory Skills Training Programme at the graduation ceremony held at the Lao Plaza Hotel in Vientiane on February 8, 2023.

In conjunction with other relevant and applicable technical/trades/engineering training, participants are trained in 10 English and Lao language modules, including leading work teams, performance counselling, problem-solving, conflict resolution, communication, and delegation techniques.
To pass an assessment, they are required to complete 80 hours of structured training, case studies and practical exercises.
PanAust Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr Daling Zheng spoke about the Supervisory Skills Development Programme for PanAust’s localisation goals in Laos.
Mr Zheng said “PanAust has enabled the programme with our commitment to develop and progress a sustainable Lao-national workforce.”
“With our focus on localising many positions, this internal talent pipeline will support future company growth in Laos,” he added.
Phu Bia Mining Chairman, Mr Chanpheng Bounnaphol, said “Our annual goal is to implement in-house training programmes available for over 90 percent of Lao-national employees working across our Operations. The programme gives them the requisite skills and competencies to move to more senior positions, once held by expatriate employees.”
Chanthy Norlorkham is one of the successful employees who has benefitted from the programme.
“I commenced employment in 2010 as a junior reliability technician at the Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation’s Fixed Plant Maintenance Department. In 2015, I completed the programme and it has enabled me to apply the requisite skills and competencies to my daily tasks. In 2022, as part of Phu Bia Mining’s localisation goal, I was promoted to an expatriate position and become a manager overseeing my department,” said Norlorkham.
