Fun new activities on offer at Khammuan cave

Innovative ways to explore the extensive Tham Nanglong cave in Khounkham district, Khammuan province, are now available for those with a taste for adventure.
The Director of Green Discovery Laos, Mr Inthy Deuansavanh, told the Vientiane Times on Wednesday that visitors will be able to float on the river that runs through the cave on inflated inner tubes, walk across a rope bridge to view the cave’s interior from a height, and also cross the cave’s broad expanse on a zipline.
Tham Nanglong cave is one of the most fascinating of the numerous limestone caverns that are scattered throughout Khammuan province.

Provincial authorities authorised the development of visitor facilities at the cave in January this year, hoping to attract more visitors and generate more income for local residents.
Other developments are planned on a 40,674-square-metre site in Khounngeun village, Khounkham district, with the Rock Viewpoint Company being awarded a 27-year concession to develop and operate the site from January 9, 2023 to January 9, 2050.
The cave is located near Phou Phamarn hill in one of the most scenic areas of central Laos.
There are already a number of activities in this area that have been designed to make the most of the dramatic landscape. These include zip-lines, a canopy walkway through trees, and hikes led by guides through forested areas to observe wildlife.
Khammuan province is a popular tourist destination and is renowned for its striking landscape and numerous caves.
It is home to a plethora of natural wonders including the caves Tham Nang Aen, Tham Pha Nha, Tham Pha, Tham Konglor and Tham Xebangfay. Sites such as Kamphengyak, which is otherwise known as the Giant Wall, and the Sangsou and Nam Sanam waterfalls are equally imposing.
Visitors should also sample some of the area’s tasty snacks. Khaonompan, which is flour mixed with beans and coconut, khaokhop - a sticky rice cake - and mam, which is pork or beef mixed with onions, chilli and herbs - are especially popular.
Also of interest to visitors are locally-made goods such as rice baskets made from finely woven bamboo, as well as clothing and other items made from naturally dyed cotton.
According to Khammuan authorities, the province has 198 officially designated tourist attractions of which 139 are nature-based, 30 are of cultural interest, and 29 have historical associations.
