Luxembourg gives funding boost to UXO clearance in Khammuan

A new UXO clearance project financed by the Government of Luxembourg officially began last week in Khammuan province, with total funding of more than US$1 million.
The project, supported by the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg through UNDP Laos, aims to enhance effectiveness and efficiency in the UXO sector to contribute to the fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goal No. 18 – “Safe Path Forward II” - and UXO Lao operations in Khammuan province.
A kick-off meeting to launch the new UXO clearance project took place in Khammuan province on March 9. The event was attended by representatives of the Lao National Unexploded Ordnance Programme (UXO Lao), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Embassy of Luxembourg, and the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency (LuxDev).
The meeting took place in Lungkhang village, Bualapha district, and was also attended by officials from line ministries in Vientiane, local authorities at the provincial and district levels in Khammuan, and representatives of UXO Lao Khammuan and the Mines Advisory Group (MAG).
The project will continue until 2024, with last week’s kick-off event introducing the project and its coordination mechanism to stakeholders and government authorities in Khammuan.
The meeting outlined UXO Lao’s work plan and informed participants about related LuxDev projects taking place in Khammuan.
Speaking at the event, National Programme Director of UXO Lao, Mr Anousak Phongsa, said “The support of the government of Luxembourg through UNDP is meaningful and is a very significant contribution to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal No. 18 as set by the Lao government.”
“The clearance of more unexploded ordnance will free up more land for agriculture and infrastructure construction in LuxDev’s target villages and districts, contributing to poverty alleviation and local development. On behalf of UXO Lao, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to the government of Luxembourg and UNDP for the support provided to UXO Lao.”
Following the meeting, participants travelled to Soppeng village where they were invited to witness a UXO demolition, and then visited the LuxDev target villages of Thakachan and Nyavet.
