Bokeo police seize 160kg of heroin in latest drug bust

Three men are in police custody in Bokeo province after their vehicle was stopped at a roadside checkpoint and 160kg of heroin was found hidden inside.
Police stationed at a checkpoint in Namkeung flagged down the vehicle, which carried a Luang Prabang licence plate, at around 2:30pm as it was travelling between Tonpheung and Huayxai districts.
While inspecting the Jeep, police noticed that the interior had been rearranged and the three occupants were acting strangely.
Police then contacted the Department for Drug Prevention and Control and took the vehicle to the provincial police headquarters for a more detailed inspection.
A thorough search found that the Jeep had been modified to conceal 400 packages of heroin weighing 160 kilograms. Specialised officers are now questioning the men to determine the source of the drugs and other details concerning the consignment.
Last month, police in Huayxai district, the capital of Bokeo province, intercepted a consignment of 6 million amphetamine pills hidden in a pick-up truck passing through Huayxainoy village.
Officers from the district’s Police Command had set up a checkpoint on a road running through the village. When they stopped and searched the vehicle they found 24 bags containing 6 million tablets, weighing 672 kilograms.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
Bokeo is located within the Golden Triangle region and is a well-known transit point for the illegal shipment of narcotics. Provincial police are working with their counterparts in China, Thailand and Myanmar and other provinces of Laos to stamp out the drug trade in this area.
The government is deploying more resources in a bid to suppress drug abuse and trade while provincial police are beefing up efforts to clamp down on trafficking.
