Storm warning issued for April 25-26
Residents of every province should prepare for possible lightning, thunderstorms, hail and strong winds from April 25-26, and protect their homes and property against damage.
The following days from April 27-30 will see higher temperatures, while more thunderstorms and wind gusts are possible in some areas of every province, the Meteorology andHydrology Department has warned.
There will be thunderstorms, hail and gusting winds throughout Huaphan and Xieng Khuang provinces from April 25-26, followed by showers from April 27-30 and temperatures ranging from 16-32 degrees Celsius.
In the northwest there will be thunderstorms, hail and wind gusts in parts of Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang and Xayaboury provinces from April 25-26, with showers and strong winds likely from April 27-30. Temperatures will range from 20-40C.
The central provinces of Vientiane, Borikhamxay and Khammuan will also have thunderstorms, hail and strong winds from April 25-26, while thunderstorms are also possible from April 27-30. Temperatures will range from 22-39C.
In Xaysomboun province, temperatures will be lower at 15-29C, and there will be thunderstorms with occasional gusting winds until April 30.
In the south there will be thunderstorms, hail and strong winds in some areas of Champassak, Xekong and Attapeu provinces from April 25-30, where temperatures will range from 25-40C.
Vientiane can expect thunderstorms and wind gusts from April 25-30, with temperatures ranging from 23-39C.
Localised storms occurred across the country from April 20-24, which damaged many houses and other buildings, but no one was injured.
In Kaenthao district, Xayaboury province, three storms occurred from April 20-23, in which 21 households in two villages were affected, with property damage estimated at more than 235 million kip.
Several houses were also damaged in Kaysone Phomvihane district, Savannakhet province, and in Mounlapamok district, Champassak province, when a storm hit the area on April 23.
On Monday a storm also passed through Saravan province, where authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage.
The Meteorology and Hydrology Department had issued weather warnings in advance of the storms, saying that thunderstorms and strong winds would become more frequent with rising temperatures, following the typical weather pattern for April.
