The huge consignment of crystal meth seized by police in Bokeo province last week.

Bokeo police seize 1,436 kg of crystal meth

Bokeo police are detecting increasing amounts of drug trafficking in the Golden Triangle area and last week intercepted a consignment of 1,436kg of crystal meth in Tonpheung district.
On May 15, Tonpheung police were tipped off by local residents that a large shipment of drugs would pass through the district after entering Laos from a neighbouring country.
District police teamed up with provincial police to set up a roadblock, where they stopped two pick-up trucks after seeing they had no licence plates. A search of the vehicles revealed 1,436 packages of crystal meth weighing 1,436 kilograms. The drivers of the vehicles fled the scene so no arrests were made.
In another recent incident, police chased a suspect pick-up truck after it failed to stop at a checkpoint in Huayxai district. They pursued the vehicle for two kilometres and found it had been abandoned, but a search turned up 150 packages of crystal meth. The driver also fled the scene and evaded arrest.
Authorities are now investigating these incidents and casting the net wide in search of the source of the drugs and those involved in drug smuggling rings.
