The Lao Ministry of Health held a meeting on April 10 to summarise the work done by the 12-member Chinese team to help the country in the fight against the Coronavirus. The event was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mr Somdy Duangdy, who is also Chairman of the National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control, and the Chinese Ambassador, Mr Jiang Zaidong.

The Chinese team arrived in Vientiane on March 29 along with essential supplies and its members worked till April 10 to reinforce efforts by local authorities to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

The team's doctors and medical experts worked with their Lao counterparts to screen and identify infected people, examine samples of suspected cases and treat patients.

The Chinese doctors and officials also shared their experiences and lessons with medical officials in Vientiane, which will be used to fight the Coronavirus.

After completing its tasks in the capital Vientiane, the team also travelled to Luang Prabang and Champassak provinces to assist in the fight against Covid-19. The Chinese experts, working in two groups, helped the authorities in the two provinces.

The main work of the Chinese experts included inspection and evaluation of high risk areas of both cities.

They also conducted training courses on appropriate care for patients for Lao doctors and nurses in provincial hospitals.

The Minister of Health, Dr Bounkong Syhavong, said the Chinese experts provided consultation and guided local medical officials in the capital and provinces to prevent and control the spread of Covid-19, manage suspected cases and treat infected patients.

They also helped Lao medical officials to improve and upgrade their methods to prevent and control Covid-19.

Dr Bounkong thanked the Chinese doctors and medical experts for their assistance, and the Chinese government for providing valuable supplies to Laos as a contribution to the efforts to prevent and control the Coronavirus.

He also presented Complimentary Certificates to the 12 Chinese doctors and medical experts.

The Chinese government delivered 2,000 virus detection kits to assist Laos’ efforts to prevent and control infections, according to the Chinese Embassy in Vientiane. The Jack Ma Foundation donated 5,000 sets of protective clothing and N95 face masks, 400,000 standard face masks, and 20,000 virus detection kits.
