City receives funding to clear drains and prevent flooding

The Environment Protection Fund will give 500 million kip to the Vientiane City Operation and Management Service to help with flood prevention in the rainy season by clearing drains and waterways.

The main objective of the project is to improve flood prevention measures and clean drains on 10 main roads, as well as the Hongsaeng canal and the channel connecting to the Huay Mark Hiew canal.
The project will be rolled out in the districts of Chanthabouly, Xaysettha, Sikhottabong, Sisattanak, Xaythany and Hadxaifong from February to December this year.
An agreement on the scheme was signed on Monday at the Vientiane City Operation and Management Service office by the Director of the Environment Protection Fund Office under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr Siphandone Sihavong, and Director General of the Vientiane City Operation and Management Service, Mr Bounchan Keosithamma.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Director General of the Planning and Finance Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr Phouvong Luangxaysana.
Many roads and canals in the capital are flooded during heavy rainfall so it is hoped the work carried out under this project will reduce the amount of flooding by enabling rainwater to drain away.
