Delegations in accord as World Peace Council meets in Vientiane
Delegations from organisations promoting peace met in Vientiane on Sunday for the Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting of the World Peace Council (WPC).
The event, hosted by the Lao Committee for Peace and Solidarity, aimed to create a conducive environment for building sustainable world peace while making valuable contributions to the challenges involved.
President of the Lao Committee for Peace and Solidarity, Mr Somphanh Phengkhammy, President of the World Peace Council, Mrs Socorro Gomes, along with delegations and guests, attended the meeting.
Mr Somphanh who is also Vice President of the Lao National Assembly, said Laos was greatly honoured and appreciative of being chosen as the venue for the important meeting.
“This meeting will enable delegations from the WPC countries and peace organisations in the region to discuss in a candid manner, and together comprehensively appraise, the regional and international situation, which is undergoing rapid, complex and unpredictable changes, with tremendous challenges to peace movements in various regions of the world,” he said.
He congratulated the World Peace Council on its active contribution to peace, thereby allowing vibrant activities to be undertaken by regional peace organisations and contribute to the cause of peace, stability, friendship and cooperation for development in the region and the world.
The meeting reviewed past campaigns and actions undertaken by the Council and like-minded organisations in the region, and discussed cooperative approaches and mechanisms for peace activities in coming years, intending to strengthen peace and stability in the region and the world as a whole.
Mr Somphanh said he was convinced the Council’s cooperative activities would make a significant contribution to the safeguarding of world peace and stability.
Since the last Asia Pacific Regional Meeting held in Kathmandu, Nepal, in July 2018, the World Peace Council has been successful in implementing the adopted plans as outlined in the last Communique/Declaration, in particular, actions dealing with people’s struggle for independence and freedom, and countering interference by imperialists.
