Khammuan medics beef up disease prevention

Khammuan province’s Health Department is taking aim at flu, diarrhoea and dengue fever after a number of people developed these illnesses recently.
Deputy Director of the department, Dr Phasouk Khammanythong, told the media that most cases of illness in the province involved flu, diarrhoea and dengue fever, but there had been no serious cases or deaths.
“Since the start of the year, we have recorded 624 cases of diarrhoea and 28 cases of dengue fever,” she said.
The health department is also taking steps to prevent infection with the newly reported coronavirus as instructed by the Ministry of Health. If any patients have a fever, cough or sneezing, they must undergo stringent health checks.
Dr Phasouk said the department had provided a short training session about the coronavirus and special rooms had been allocated for patients suspected of carrying the virus.
International border crossings in the province have been staffed with health officials to screen for possible cases. If foreign nationals are suspected of having an infection, the department will ask them to undergo a health check in their home country, while Lao citizens who exhibit symptoms of the coronavirus will be instructed to undergo tests at the provincial hospital.
