Korean association provides 10 billion kip for rural students

The Sharing Culture Arts Association of Korea has provided assistance including clothing, shoes, desks and chairs worth over 10 billion kip (US$1.3 million) to benefit disadvantaged students.

The donation aims to help students in rural areas who have suffered as a result of natural disasters and those who lack opportunities.
The items were handed over at the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare in Vientiane on Thursday by the President of the Sharing Culture Arts Association of Korea, Dr Yoo Hyun Sook, and received by Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Mrs Baykham Khattiya.
The event was attended by a representative from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos Mr Shin Sung-soon, senior ministry officials and other guests.
Mrs Baykham thanked the Korean association for the generous gift of educational equipment, dried food and clothing.
The donation was timely and would help meet the urgent need for assistance in provinces around the country.
Mrs Baykham said the Korean government, private sector and civil society had been a great help to Laos, especially in the labour and social welfare fields.
She said Korea was a long-term supporter of the Lao government and people, especially in terms of human resource improvement in the form of technical assistance and equipment for the Laos-Korea Skills Development Institute.
This assistance is essential for Laos and benefits the poorest people and students who lack the opportunity to better their prospects.
The Sharing Culture Arts Association of Korea has previously assisted poor people by providing clothing and other essentials in rural areas, according to the ministry. The association also provided fire trucks and fire prevention equipment for four provinces.
