Laos’ last COVID-19 patient discharged from hospital

Laos is officially free of Covid-19 infections with the last patient discharged from Mittaphab Hospital in Vientiane on Tuesday after twice testing negative for the virus.
The last patient, who was the eighth case of 19 detected, is an 18-year-old from Donnokkhoun village, Sisattanak district and was treated at the hospital from March 28 to June 9.

During the daily press briefing by the National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control on Tuesday, Minister of Health, Associate Prof. Dr Bounkong Syhavong expressed his admiration to Mittaphab Hospital doctors and nurses for their professionalism in successfully treating the infected patients.
Nevertheless, authorities are not resting on their laurels and will continue to implement appropriate measures to avert a re-emergence of the coronavirus.
The taskforce committee called on the public to remain vigilant with the pandemic still evident in many other countries and to persist with preventive measures such as washing hands with soap and wearing face masks.
Dr Bounkong said the taskforce committee and specialist medical teams stood ready to treat any new outbreak of COVID-19 after the nation recorded its first confirmed case on March 3.
Up to 5 pm on June 8, a total of 1,466 people entered Laos from Thailand, Vietnam and China via border checkpoints. Most were truck drivers, and all had their temperature checked with none showing signs of fever.
From January to June 8, the taskforce committee has tested samples from 8,926 people for the virus, with 19 people testing positive. There have been no new cases for 58 days. The government has 80 quarantine centres across the country where 3,262 people are now staying with no infections reported.
According to the taskforce committee, as of June 9 at 6am, the coronavirus had spread to 213 countries and territories, with 7,182,933 million confirmed cases globally. The virus has resulted in 408,015 deaths, while 3,506,341 people have recovered.
As of June 9 at 6am, Asean countries had recorded 105,113 infections with 3,102 deaths.
