Minister highlights army’s deep-seated ties to the Lao people

Strict allegiance to the public’s interests has engendered lasting support for the Lao People’s Army by the multiethnic people since it was established 71 years ago, according to a statement by the army’s top commander.
Minister of Defence General Chansamone Chanyalath made the comment when speaking at a ceremony at the ministry on Monday to pay tribute to the heroic achievements of the Lao People’s Army on its 71st anniversary.
The Lao People’s Army was established by President Kaysone Phomvihane on January 20, 1949, at the revolutionary stronghold in the Laohoung-Phiengsa sub-district of Huaphan province. It was named the Lao Isara Army, which was later changed to the Lao People’s Liberation Army.

The army’s establishment was instrumental in the fight for the liberation of Laos under the guidance of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
From the outset, the army took up arms against an enemy that had more manpower and was equipped with sophisticated weaponry.
“Despite that, through the spirit of patriotism and the tradition of courage passed down by our ancestors, our army fought courageously and gradually overcame the enemy with triumphant achievements,” General Chansamone said.
“Throughout the trials and tribulations of the flames of war, and in the most difficult circumstances, our army performed with great courage and created a new page in our history, beginning a wonderful heroic tradition,” he added.
The minister, who is a Politburo member, pointed out the Party’s dedication in leading and educating the army, and cleverly devising strategies and tactics to match the differing circumstances that arose.
General Chansamone said the Party firmly believed that, under its leadership, the army’s troops and officers had succeeded in their courageous mission and had served the nation with loyalty and integrity.
“We, the army, always refer to the people, and sincerely do everything in the interests of the people. Because of this we receive good care, love and support from them, which provides us with everlasting strength,” he said.
General Chansamone, representing the ministry’s leaders, conveyed his sincere appreciation of the virtue of the revolutionary fighters, who gave their blood and their bodies in the service of their country.
He congratulated defence personnel and soldiers on their achievements, and expressed his confidence in their continued success in carrying out their honourable duties.
