Prominent tourism entrepreneur eyes Vientiane province’s hidden potential

The relatively quiet districts of Xanakham, Meun and Meuangfeuang in Vientiane province have tourism development potential to lure more local and international visitors like the better known Vangvieng.
That’s the opinion of the owner of Eco-tourism operator Green Discovery Laos, Mr Inthy Deuansavanh, after exploring the districts’ scenic sites adjacent to the Mekong River and other natural locations.

“I believe the locations will prove to be popular destinations and capable of attracting more local and foreign visitors like Vangvieng if they are more widely advertised to the public, and developed further by tourism enterprises in coordination with local officials,” Mr Inthy said.
Coordination between the private sector and concerned local officials would enable the best locations to be established as tourist sites in future.
Mr Inthy also advised restaurant and attraction operators nationwide, as well as tourists, to comply with the relevant rules and laws, such as avoiding excess noise, because most visitors were attracted to natural sites for the tranquillity and relaxing setting.
“Some restaurant operators at tourist attractions are unable to follow the rules,” he noted.
Green Discovery Laos has recently developed a range of exciting outdoor activities at Phou Phamarn Hill in Khounkham district, Khammuan province.
This scenic spot features zip-lines, a canopy walkway through the trees, and hikes led by guides through forested areas to observe wildlife, all developed and managed by Green Discovery Laos.
Visitors will not only be able to enjoy some spectacular scenery but can buy goods whose sale will contribute to the income of local people. Residents will sell their locally made items at specially designated gift shops.
Phou Phamarn Hill is located in Khoun Ngeun village about 10km from the centre of Khounkham district. Road access to the site is good, according to official reports.
According to the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Laos has vast potential in developing tourism sites, with a number of incentives introduced to boost investment in the sector. Investors were welcome to develop and operate tourism sites in line with the country’s laws. More than a thousand tourism sites have not been developed or opened for services as the necessary facilities and infrastructure to access them is not in place.
The government initially planned to attract about 4.7 million international visitors in 2020 and generate revenue of more than US$900 million. Some 886,440 visitors came to Laos in the first three months of this year.
