Savannakhet University training improves institution governance

Savannakhet University and Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) are continuing to strengthen the university’s administrative skills to improve the quality of its management.
Personnel from the university recently participated in a training course as part of a project to improve governance skills at the institution which began on September 4.
Vice President of Savannakhet University, Mr Bounhueang Ninchaleun, Institute of Political Studies of Aix en Provence representative, Mr Laurent Sermet and Head of the AUF Office in Vientiane, Mr Antoine Blomqvist, along with officials from relevant sectors attended the project opening ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Mr Bounhueang Ninchaleun highlighted the challenges facing the young university (established in 2009) and the importance for it to strengthen its governance skills by implementing a quality approach to policy.
He said the quality approach project aims to assist the university’s staff and decision-makers in analysing its social, economic and political environment, as well as its resources, to define medium and long-term strategic choices.
The quality approach applies to many areas, from training, research and administration to partnership and human resources policies.
Mr Laurent Sermet said the project begins with a week of training and workshops with an expert in the quality approach who has been working with AUF Regional Office in Hanoi and a committee of French-speaking experts for six years on this approach.
“I know that this quality approach workshop may seem, at first, challenging and complex. However, I am convinced that, in the long term, it will provide all staff with greater ease of organisation and a better understanding of the services to be provided by the university to students and Lao society,” he said.
